Why not try and play some word games while you are here.

These are based on Victorian Parlour games.

All you need is a group of people to play and your wits about you.

ONE SYLLABLE

Stand around in a circle, alternatley male and female ( if you can).

A nominated player will begin by asking a question to the player on

the immediate right. This player must reply by one word of one syllable

or a forfeit will be incurred for every extra syllable or word.

Choose your own forfeits!!

Woman: Excuse me, sir, do you like computers?

Man: Yes. ( then to lady on his right)

Could you tell me the name of the cleverest woman in the world?

Woman: Me.

Who has the best avatar, you are I?

Man: I.

What sort of man do you think I am?

Woman: Mad.

Which do you like best yellow or purple?

Man: Purple. ( he pays a forfeit).

WHO AM I?

Each player in turn secretly assumes the identity of a famous person, living

or dead. It is the task of the others to discover this identity by asking

questions. The 'celebrity' must answer only 'Yes' or 'No'.

Q. Are you a man?

A. No

Q. Are you living?

A. No.

Q. Are you an actress?

And so on until the identity is discovered as being Florence Nightingale,

Lucretia Borgia, Helen of Troy, Annie Lennox or who you have chosen.

THE TRAVELLER'S ALPHABET

Stand in a circle again if you wish - so you know who is to go next.

Again you can have as many players as you can get together .

The first Player has to begin by choosing a destination that begins with the letter A.

The player on the left will then ask, ‘What will you do there?’. The first Player’s

answer must be a sentence in which the verb, adjective and noun begin with the letter A.

It is now the second Player’s turn to announce a destination that begins with B and give an

appropriate response when questioned. Go through the alphabet all the way to z if you can.

Don’t forget to think up some forfeits for unsuccessful attempts.

1. I am going to Arabia

2. What will you do there?

1. I shall add aggressive animals.

2. I am going to Bradford.

3. What will you do there?

2. I shall bury beautiful bandanas.

3. I am going to Canada

4. What will you do there?

3. I shall cuddle colourful canaries.

GHOSTS

A game of five lives.

Any number of people can play this game. Each player has five lives

when all five are lost the player is out of the game.

The first player types a letter, the next player adds another letter and so on.

You must avoid completing a word - as that will lose you a life.

You will also lose a life if you can’t add a letter that leads to a word.

Player 1:V

Player 2:VI

Player 3:VIR

Player 4:VIRT

Player 6:VIRTU

Player 7:VIRTUA

Player 8:VIRTUAL ( player 8 has no choice and loses a life)

You can also challenge other players in this game. If Player 7 thought that there was

no word beginning with the letters provided by Player 6 ( in this case VIRTU ) Player 7

could challenge Player 6 to supply a word. If Player 6 can provide a word then Player 7

loses a life, if Player 6 cannot think of a word then Player 6 loses a life.

After such a challenge the player who follows the one who has just lost a life restarts

the game with a new letter. The game isn’t over until only one person is alive.
